Recipes: Dry Creek Vineyard Wine Pairings

Here at TuscanVines our love for Italian wine and fine food is well known.  We enthusiastically embrace the wine lifestyle;  the idea that life slows, bottles uncork and family relaxes at the rustic kitchen table.  Wine and food are inextricably linked with family and conversation.  Nowhere is that more true than Italy and in that spirit, we feature an extensive Recipes Page,...

In Defense of Connoisseurship: Is Populist Wine Writing Dumbing Things Down?

By Stephen Eliot I have spent the larger part of my professional life writing and teaching about wine. Neither pursuit has been about simplifying or dumbing down what is a rich and wonderfully fascinating field of interest, but rather they have been about education and understanding both for myself and, I hope, for those who came to me with questions. I have been called a wine geek but never,...

Le Cirque Wine Co. Whiz Bang Shiraz 2014

This has got some whiz but no bang. Cool as label though. Concentrated blood plum and black fruit. Clove, nutmeg and some reddish earth. Juicy fruit is delivered but that juicy character subsides and dries out just a bit too much than I’d prefer. Alas,  a ballsy style which finishes smooth with a full, drying length. Have in the medium term but I reckon your steak will thank you more now...

The Woodhouse Wine Estates

The Woodhouse Wine Estates is run in Washington by Bijal & Sinead Shah. I recently covered their Daríghe, and their other wines are named after family friends (Steve Dussek, retired chief operating officer of Nextel) or their children (daughter Kennedy Shah). Bijal operates a number of enterprises both here and in India focused on haute coture and high technology, while Sinead is a 777 pilot...

King’s Ransom for the Wine of Kings?

~ Vineyards in Barolo ~ Monforte; Serralunga.  They’re world famous names that wine lovers recognize instantly.  Giacosa, Conterno, Gaja, Scavino, Mascarello, Clerico, Sandrone,  and many others are equally recognizable.  They have built a foundation of greatness in Piedmont that is unmistakeable.   However,  it is often said that success breeds...

Le Cirque Wine Co. Kissing Booth Sauvignon Blanc 2014

Cool name and I dig the label. There’s the majority of the sales pitch done and dusted. A clever effort by the marketing team here me thinks. Le Cirque Wine Co. is a label falling under the ever growing Angove Family Wines banner. The contents back up the label too. Gooseberry, passion fruit, sugar snap peas, field grass and a drop of lemon juice. Flavours are clean and the fruit is crisp, lingering...

On the wine trail in Central Otago

As mentioned yesterday, I’m trying my best to make this Queenstown trip holiday rather than a wine tour. Today was all about wine, however, with visits to Amisfield, Peregrine, Gibbston Valley, Carrick and Mt Difficulty. Given this was a holiday I took no notes, but plenty of broad impressions: – Pinot Gris continues to put in a claim as Central Otago’s premium white variety....

Wine and Food in Panama

Empty Red Wine Glasses in Panama March 2015 – There are no wineries in Panama, but there are plenty of wines in the restaurants, bars, grocery stores and occasional liquor store. Due to its location, linking Central America to South America, it is not surprising that the majority of the wine is from Chile and Argentina. However, we also found a large selection from Spain, and a few bottles...

The Death of The Wine Critic Is Greatly Exaggerated

By Charles Olken I have been reading about my death (professional, not personal) for a half dozen years now, and maybe more, depending on when the jabbering classes stopped dissing the Wine Spectator and turned their collective ire on Robert Parker. Now, to be sure, Mr. Parker is getting old and he has amassed both a great deal of power and respect on the one hand, and a growing but hardly...

Buying Into The Millennial Wine Buyer

A couple of weeks ago I sat on a panel in Saint Helena that explored the Millennial wine buyer. The primary question was how do you reach this growing demographic? My response to the primarily Napa Valley and Sonoma County winery representatives in the room was this: Beware: Millennials are not buying expensive wines. And if you are selling $ 50+ bottles of wine and selling out every year and if your...

Confessions of an Italian Wine Lover

This is the holiest week of the year for Roman Catholics.  Holy Week commences with Palm Sunday and culminates with the rebirth that is represented by Easter.  It only seems fitting that I should use this week for reflection and confess that which has been roiling within me;  festering for decades just below the core surface of my very being.  Therefore,  I’m freeing...

Public Principles and Wine in Indiana

I’ve always thought that if one’s biblical perspective informed them that homosexuality was immoral, the best course of action would be to not engage in homosexual acts. Likewise, if one feels reliably sure that the Bible instructs that God is opposed to sex out-of-wedlock, then the best course of action is to refrain from sex until married. But I’m old-fashioned. It appears that...

Looking for Answers in the “New” Wine Culture

By Stephen Eliot It is said that the new era of wine appreciation is one of freedom, of being able to make your own choices finally freed of the critics and so-called gatekeepers who have for years capitalized on so-called consumer insecurity. Wine is at last being demystified, we are told, yet ironically there has never been a time when the conversation about fine wine is subject to so...

Jurassic Park & Jurassic Wine

Say Jurassic Park and you instantly conjure images of being chased by voracious dinosaurs. But Jurassic has another, much more benign connotation, especially for wine lovers. The wines from Jura are called Jurassic, because the origins of the soil can be traced to the Jurassic era. Some people would even say that Jura wines-at least the traditional, oxidative wines- are a kind of a dinosaur that have...

A unicorn wine: Clos de Tart 2012

Clos de Tart 2012 Ah Clos de Tart. For so long an enigma, but now more like a unicorn wine… I’ve been lucky to try a few vintages of this unique Grand Cru Monopole and this 2012 surely rates as one of the absolute best. What makes this particular wine – and many of the recent vintages – so very good is the polish and perfection. There’s not a single hair out of place,...
